Ash trees have thin bark with many ridges. Their branches are gray.
On each branch, the ash leaves are pinnate. Pinnate leaves are located symmetrically, directly across from each other.
In the old Irish alphabet called Ogham, the letter for an ash tree was a vertical line with five horizontal lines sticking out to the right. This shape was easy to carve on stone or wood.
